Hyderabad is one of the fastest growing cities in India. It is the center for many industrial, commercial, and IT establishments blended with ancient structures and traditions which provide glimpses of splendid history of the city. Hyderabad with a history of over 400 years, is rich in diverse cultures.
The history of Hyderabad begins in 1512 after Quli Qutb Shah seized power from Bahamani kingdom and established the fortress city and kingdom of Golconda. Golconda was later named as Hyderabad after the name of Hyder Mahal, wife of Quli Qutb Shah. All the seven rulers of the Qutb Shahi dynasty were great builders, who contributed to the growth and development of Indo-Persian and Indo-Islamic literature and culture in the city. Hyderabad became one of the leading markets of diamonds, pearls, steel for arms and printed fabric during the reign of Qutb Shahi. They ruled the Deccan nearly for 171 years.
The glory, fame and abundant prosperity of Hyderabad attracted the powerful Mughal emperor Aurangazeb to attack Hyderabad. After a long eight month seize, Aurangazeb captured Hyderabad in 1687. Aurangazeb expanded his Mughal empire covering the entire sub continent. However his empire rapidly declined after his death in 1707.
Mir Quamaruddin, the then Governor of the Deccan established Asif Jahi dynasty in 1724 and declared independence from Mughal rule. Asif Jahi dynasty ruled right up to 1948 nearly for 224 years. During this period Persian, Urdu, Telugu, and Marathi developed simultaneously. Irrespective of their religion, deserving persons were given highest official positions. Nizam won friendship with British and French and continued to rule. The Nizams contributed to the growth and development of Hyderabad both economically and culturally. They built huge reservoirs like the Nizam Sagar, Tungabadra, Osman Sagar and Himayath Sagar. The state had its own currency, mint, postal system and railways.
Hyderabad became the capital city of Andhra Pradesh on November 1, 1956. Today it is called as Greater Hyderabad and has grown from 175 sq.km. To 650 sq.km. It is regarded as a major IT hub as many IT and ITES have set up their operations here. It has numerous fortune 500 companies. Hyderabad has three central universities, two deemed universities and six state universities. It is the financial and economical capital of the state.
The history of Hyderabad is rich and diverse. As many different dynasties ruled the city, many diversified monuments, cultures, and traditions have evolved. And Hyderabadis have developed a distinct culture, which is a mixture of both ancient Hindu and Islamic cultures.

Festive Seasons of Hyderabad

Hyderabad is a multi-cultural and multi-religious city. People living here are of diverse cultures and faiths and celebrate festivals with joy and excitement. Every month comes a major festival celebrated by one or the other community in the Hyderabad city.

Festivals in Hyderabad attract a lot of tourists across the world. Not only Hyderabadis (locals of Hyderabad), but also the tourists enjoy these festivals. So, when you plan a visit to Hyderabad, look out for the popular festivals that are celebrated here and be a part of them. Some of these festivals are exclusive to Hyderabad, while some others are common to most parts of India.

Start of festive season (July-August):

The festive season in Hyderabad starts with Varalaxmi Vratham, it falls in the month of July/August. It is an important ritual performed by married women. Womenfolk believe that by performing this ritual, goddess Lakshmi would be graceful to give good to all in the family.

In Ashada (a month in Telugu calendar, which coincides with July-August), 'Bonalu', a famous festival specific to Hyderabad and nearby areas is celebrated. On every Sunday of Ashada, one area of Hyderabad celebrates the Bonalu. The celebration goes on for a month. Bonalu means offering a meal to the Goddess (Mahankali) for fulfillment of their prayers. Women come to temples with brass or earthen pots on their heads. The pots are decorated with small neem branches, kumkum (vermilion), haldi (turmeric) and limestone and on the top of the pot a diya (lamp) is lit. The pot contains cooked rice with milk, sugar or jaggery. They offer sarees, bangles and all the other items specific to married women. On Bonalu, you see men painted themselves as tigers in yellow with black stripes, they are traditionally called 'potharaju', and they dance to the beats of drummers.

Ganesh/Vinayaka Chaturthi (August-September):

Ganesh Chaturthi usually falls in August - September. It is celebrated because it marks the birth of elephant headed Lord Ganesha, the son of Hindu deities Shiva and Parvathi. In Hyderabad, the festival is celebrated with great passion and joy for 10 days. Ganesh idols (from two inches small to 40 feet tall) are placed in every street and even in narrow lanes. People from other religions also participate in the daily events such as the cultural programs that go on for 10 days. The festival ends with immersion of idols in water (on the 11th day).

Thousands of crowds carrying Ganesh idols, gather at Tank Bund (a stretch to Hussain Sagar lake in the city) for the immersion. The Ganesh idols are taken on procession in the streets. You can see people dancing to drumbeats, throwing colours on each other and playing loud devotional songs. Later, the idols are immersed in the Hussain Sagar lake and other lakes in the city. Around 1,00,000 idols are immersed every year in the Hyderabad city.

Dushera and Diwali (September-October-November):

Dushera and Diwali are the biggest and important festivals celebrated in Hyderabad. The two festivals usually fall in the month of September to November. Dushera signifies the victory of good over the evil. The festival is celebrated for 10 days; for nine days, people worship Goddess Durga and on the 10th day, people celebrate Dushera by burning the effigy of Ravana, the demon king.

During Dushera, people in Hyderabad also celebrate Bathukamma, a festival exclusive to the city. Bathukamma, is a colourful floral festival. Beautiful flowers are arranged in concentrated layers or colourful pyramids like a cone (called as Bathukamma). Women in large numbers gather in their locality in the evenings and place their 'Bathukammas' on the ground and dance around them singing folk songs. Later, in the night the Bathukammas are floated in the water.

Diwali, the 'Festival of Lights', is auspicious for Hindus. People decorate their houses with flowers, clay lamps, and colourful electric bulbs. Regardless of age, gender, community people enjoy bursting crackers and colourful fireworks. Special sweet dishes are prepared. Children enjoy the most, as they are very excited to fire crackers.

During this festive season, you can experience the shopping extravagance of Hyderabad, as you get a variety of apparels, accessories, food and various other things, making the city a great place to shop, eat and enjoy.

Ramadan or Ramzaan:

Ramadan is the most important festival of Muslims. It falls on the ninth month of Islamic calendar. During this festival month, Muslims fast for thirty days. The fast begins at dawn and ends at sunset. The festival is an occasion for goodwill and friendship. During this festival season one should not miss the shopping experience at Charminar, you can see people shopping throughout the night. One more thing you cannot afford to miss is Hyderabadi Haleem, a meat stew available only during Ramadan season. Haleem from 'Pista House' and 'Shah Ghouse' (local restaurants) is world famous.

Eid-ul-Fitr is celebrated on the last day of the fast. Early in the morning, prayer is offered followed by feast and visiting relatives and friends. 'Sheerkhurma', a special dessert is prepared and shared among friends and relatives on this day.

Christmas (December):

Christmas is celebrated on 25th of December. It marks the birth of Jesus Christ. Celebrated all over the world, this festival is popular in Hyderabad too. On Christmas, you can see a bright and vibrant Hyderabad - decorated homes and Christmas trees, children singing carols and Christmas stars hanging in front of the houses.

Makara Sankranti (January):

The Last Nizam of Hyderabad

Osman Ali Khan Asaf Jah VII was the last Nizam of the princely state of Hyderabad who ruled Hyderabad from 1911 to 1948. Hyderabad under his rule witnessed many cultural, economic and administrative reforms. Although praised for many of his developments, he is very infamous for his Razakar movement where he was accused of spreading violence.

Born to Mir Mahboob Ali Khan Asaf Jah VI, Osman Ali Khan became apparent heir to the throne of Hyderabad after death of his elder brother in 1887. Many eminent scholars were engaged to teach him Urdu, Persian, and English. He was a great scholar and wrote poetry in Persian and Urdu.

Richest man in the world:

Mir Osman Ali Khan succeeded his father Mir Mahboob Ali Khan on his death in 1911. The state of Hyderabad was the largest of the princely states with an area of 86,000 square miles or 2,23,000 sq.kms, which is nearly the size of today's United Kingdom. Nizam was considered as the richest man during his days. He is Fifth on Forbes 'All Time Wealthiest' list of 2008. He was even featured on the cover of the 1937 'Time' magazine. It was estimated that he had $2 billion fortune in early 1940s.

Developments under his rule:

One of Nizam's first assignments after he ascended to throne was to take Mokshagundam Visweswaraiah's advice on how to control the floods and use the excess floodwater. He undertook work of embankment of the Musi River and constructed Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar Dams at Gandipet on Visweswaraiah's advice. It was because of his foresight and commitment to the welfare of his people, old city suffered minimum damage in the recent floods. He also undertook some irrigation projects on the Tungabhadra River.

It is said that upto 11 percent of the Nizam's budget was spent on education. He set up many schools, colleges, universities including Osmania University and even a 'Department for Translation'. He made primary education compulsory and provided free of cost education to the weaker sections of the society. He made immense donations to many institutions such as the Jamia Nizamia, the Darul Uloom Deoband, the Banaras Hindu University and even to some universities abroad.

The Nizam was responsible for starting earliest public sector undertakings such as Nizam Sugar Factory and Singareni Collieries. He set up the 'City Improvement Board' and replaced slums with planned colonies.

Mir Osman Ali Khan started his own bank called the 'Hyderabad State Bank', which is now referred as State Bank of Hyderabad. Hyderabad was the only state which had its own currency, the Hyderabadi rupee, in British India.

During his reign, many major buildings like Osmania General Hospital, Andhra Pradesh High Court, Asafiya Library (State Central Library), Town Hall (Assembly Hall), Jubilee Hall, Hyderabad Museum (State Museum), and the magnificent Hyderabad House at New Delhi were built.

Mir Osman Ali Khan was one of the great rulers of Hyderabad, who initiated many development programs in Hyderabad. Developments under his rule speak out his passion to serve the people. Despite of his major contribution to the developments in Hyderabad, he is often criticized for his only ambitious desire of becoming independent with the help of Razakars. Mir Osman Ali Khan died on 24th February, 1967.
